Qantas Founders Museum Super Constellation Project

The Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, Queensland is a place that will always be close to my heart. I flew up there from Melbourne over 3 days in 2017 in one of my first ‘big’ trips in the Cirrus SR20.

Qantas 747 static display at the Qantas Founders Museum, Longreach

I had two nights in Longreach and made the most of the full day I was there exploring the Qantas Founders Museum and checking out the aircraft they have there. I thoroughly recommend the tour of the 747 if you’re planning on visiting. It’s a fun hour or so, exploring inside, outside and on top of the wing (if you want) of the fantastic jumbo jet they have there.

Also on display is a Boeing 707 (VH-XBA) the first jet aircraft owned by Qantas and sister aircraft to the 707 flown by John Travolta. Fascinating plane, with a really interesting history.

Super Constellation Restoration Project

Currently, the QFOM are spending their time restoring a Super Constellation aircraft which is scheduled to be ready for display to the public in 2020. The exterior being worked on first, before moving to a restoration of the interior.

This week saw a pretty significant milestone as the tail assembly was attached to the fuselage as you can see in the lead image at the top of this story (image from the @qfom Twitter page).

It goes without saying that if you’re ever in Longreach and you’re an aviation buff then a visit to the Qantas Founders Museum is well worth it. But pilots looking for an adventure of your own, planning a trip up there over the vast outback and dropping in to some of Queensland’s iconic towns is a great experience too.
